Getting Started

Commission artwork featuring real, ethically sourced insects and taxidermy—custom-made to suit your style.

Preparing to order a commissioned artwork featuring real insects and/or taxidermy involves a few key steps to ensure a meaningful and personalized piece. Start by considering the style and mood you’d like—natural, gothic, whimsical, or scientific. Think about the types of insects or specimens you’re drawn to (such as butterflies, beetles, or small preserved animals), as well as preferred colors or themes. Decide on the display format—glass dome, shadow box, or antique frame—and where you plan to place the artwork. It's also helpful to set a budget and timeframe. Sharing your vision, inspirations, and preferences with Peculiar Botany will help create a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

Choose from a range of specimens including butterflies, beetles, and small taxidermy animals, arranged in unique displays such as glass domes, shadow boxes, or framed wall art. Each piece is handcrafted with care, making it a striking and personal addition to any collection or space.

Customization available for vessel, colors, layout, and specimen types.

I do not and will not recreate and/or duplicate another artist's work, so please do not inquire if I am able.

Selections

Selections available for ordering a commissioned artwork featuring real insects and taxidermy include a variety of customizable options to suit your style and space. Choose from a wide range of ethically sourced insects—such as butterflies, moths, beetles, and exotic specimens—as well as small taxidermy animals or bones. Display options include glass domes, shadow boxes, or framed wall pieces. You can select color palettes, themes (natural, gothic, botanical, etc.), arrangement styles, and even include symbolic or personal elements. Each piece is handcrafted, making it a unique and meaningful work of art tailored to your vision.

Should you prefer a specific backing color/texture, please let me know so I may source it and provide further recommendations. In my experience, certain fabrics such as silk and lace, provide for a more labor intensive creation, and also tend to lend to issues such as puckering and pulling over time.

Should you have any specific floral requests, please let me know. I hand dry and preserve most all florals used therefore allowing for a wider selection, under the condition I am able to source the preferred florals.

Should you care to include any additional items or embellishments, such as pearls, bows, gemstones (precious or manmade), bones, photos, or feathers, please let me know; aside from precious gemstones, all can be added at no additional cost.

Pricing Estimates

All commissions begin at $200 and will be priced according to the materials and time involved in creating or procuring the commissioned work, therefore final prices will naturally vary. Some pieces will require additional costs, whilst others will fall in right at $200.

60% of total cost is due at agreement, prior to creation and is non-refundable; the remaining 40% to be paid at completion. Payment plans are available for deposit; If selecting a payment plan, creation will not begin until 60% of the total cost has been paid.

Finer Details

Execution times are estimated; all is dependent on shipping, pinning, collection of needed items, and curation time. Expedited items will come with an additional cost. Most items will take a minimum of eight (8) weeks to complete; some pieces can be completed sooner, and some longer. Photo updates of progress will be sent biweekly until completion. At any time during creation the ability to change artistic direction can be done for an additional fee.

All specimen selections/recommendations can be changed prior to signed commission agreement; if you’d prefer a different color scheme, or different specimens, please let me know so I may revise the proposal to reflect changes. Etsy is an excellent source to review and research specimens should you so choose. I am more than happy to provide additional specimen recommendations. Once agreement is signed, specimens cannot be changed unless signee is willing to pay the additional charge and wait the additional time. If providing your own specimen, once the piece is paid in full or 60% of the total has been received, a shipping address will be provided for you to ship your specimen at your own cost; return shipping is included in commission price. You will be notified the moment I receive your provided specimen and work will begin at that time.

60% of total cost is due at agreement, prior to creation and is non-refundable; the remaining 40% to be paid at completion. Payment plans are available for deposit; if selecting a payment plan, creation will not begin until 60% of the total cost has been paid.
