This listing is for a non-refundable group insect mounting class deposit only; the remainder of the class pricing, less the deposit, will be invoiced to the client upon determination of class size and additional materials, (if applicable). Pricing per class size can be found below.
Step into the delicate art of insect preservation with a private, hands-on pinning class led by Peculiar Botany. This personalized session offers guided instruction tailored to your pace and curiosity.
Each participant will learn how to rehydrate and mount up to three unique specimens, explore proper techniques for handling delicate wings and bodies, and gain tips for long-term preservation. All necessary materials are provided for in-person sessions.

During your private insect pinning session, you’ll enjoy a hands-on, guided experience tailored to your pace and interests. Whether in-person in San Antonio or online via video call, the class includes:
- Rehydration Techniques: Learn how to safely rehydrate dried insects to make them pliable for mounting.
- Pinning and Mounting: Carefully position wings, legs, and antennae on pins or glass slides while maintaining symmetry and preserving delicate details.
- Specimen Handling: Discover tips for handling fragile insects without damage, ensuring long-lasting, display-ready specimens.
- Preservation Tips: Explore methods for drying, curing, and storing your specimens to maintain their beauty over time.
- Personalized Guidance: Receive step-by-step instruction and feedback from an experienced instructor, with plenty of time for questions and practice.
- Materials Overview: For in-person classes, all tools and specimens are provided upon arrival. Online participants will get guidance for assembling a workspace and postage of tools and specimens prior to scheduling class.
- Creative Exploration: Embrace your curiosity, enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, and experience the satisfaction of bringing natural artistry to life.
By the end of the session, you’ll have up to three beautifully mounted specimens and a deeper understanding of the delicate craft of insect preservation.
Included for each participant:
- One (1) adjustable foam insect mounting board set (3 pieces)
- One (1) set of two (2) tweezers (fine-point & flat)
- One (1) set of forty (40) #2 entomology mounting pins
- Six (6) glassine pinning sheets
- One (1) set of three (3) mounting glass slides (six slides total)
- Three (3) practice butterflies or moths (& perhaps a few extras!)
- One (1) digital copy of our comprehensive mounting instructions

Age Requirements & Group Suggestions
Participants must be 14 years or older to join our group insect pinning classes. Those under 18 should be accompanied by a responsible adult to ensure safety and guidance throughout the session.
For group bookings, we recommend small to medium-sized groups to ensure each participant receives personalized attention and hands-on instruction. This allows everyone to fully engage with the delicate art of insect pinning, ask questions, and explore the specimens at their own pace.
Class Duration & Time
Our insect pinning adventures are designed to let curiosity lead the way. Group classes typically unfold over 1.5-3 hours, giving everyone ample time to explore and mount their specimens with care. Private sessions run 1.5–2.5 hours, tailored to your pace and questions.
We also carve out a little time for snacks and refreshments, so you can sip, nibble, and marvel at nature’s tiny wonders while you work. Every minute is meant to be leisurely, attentive, and just a touch enchanted.
Scheduling & Cancellation Policy
Private group insect pinning classes can only be scheduled on available dates and must be booked at least two weeks in advance. Any classes cancelled by the purchaser within 24 hours of the scheduled time will not be given priority for rescheduling. Please plan accordingly to ensure your preferred date and time.
